The Nord Pas-de-Calais is all about mines, miners, miners' dwellings, slag heaps, and the many generations who worked underground.
You need of course to have some grasp of the history of the miners, and the Lewarde Mining History Centre is there to give you a clearer idea about this world.
The area is still marked by the traces left by mining which it is careful to preserve, whilst at the same time developing numerous cultural, artistic, and environmental projects enabling the coalmining area to establish itself as a diverse new destination. Being placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List has provided an additional opportunity to highlight its specificities.
Visitors can experience pleasures to be found nowhere else, such as climbing up the "tétons de l'Europe" (nipples of Europe) at the base of 11/19, or attending concerts staged in a giant musical instrument.
